Philosophy

My philosophy: The major labels are taking fewer chances on new acts while ignoring the consumer demand for better, more diverse music choices. This demand was clearly stated by the popularity of Napster. MP3s aren't the death of CDs. They are the rebirth of Consumer choice in hearing the music they desire. They are the new radio. As our airwaves become more controlled by corporate radio the opportunity to hear new music becomes increasingly rare. Consumers are flocking to the internet to feed their appetite for diversity.

The industry is missing both the boat and the point. The electronic age has changed the landscape of music distribution forever. Trying to stop free MP3 distribution is like closing the barn door after the horses have all run free. The technology and ingenuity of users and programmers will always be one step ahead of a slow moving industry. So why fight it? Why not use the technology? Besides, it is my belief that the free distribution of MP3s actually boosts the sales of CDs. People still want the official releases of bands they love. They want the artwork. They want the real package. I know on a personal level, I have purchased many CDs by artists I’d never have known about or given a listen to without the sites like the original Napster and now, Myspace. I am not alone in my beliefs. There is a community of artists and fans that feel the same way. Unfortunately, the cat and mouse lawsuit game has forced the nature of this community to the fringes and it is spread out with only the most loose of organization. Still, it thrives.

My hope is to in some small way galvanize this community. Give them a place to exchange ideas and art. Give smaller bands, who struggle for a voice in an industry saturated with clones, a place to promote themselves. If you share this philosophy, welcome to our community.
